Earn Two Certifications in One Online MSN Program
Rockhurst University’s online MSN Dual Track allows you to combine two specialized nursing disciplines into one degree so that you can care for patients of all ages with varied medical needs. The certifications included in this dual program are:
- Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP): Focuses on the health and well-being of diverse populations, from pediatrics to older adults.
- Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP): Expand your skills to provide mental health care to adults, children and families.
Delivered by Saint Luke’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences, our online MSN Dual Track can be taken on a full- or part-time basis, depending on your personal needs.

How does the clinical placement process work?
You’ll work with a dedicated Rockhurst placement coordinator who will walk you through the process and be your primary point of contact. Based on your goals and where you live, your placement coordinator will identify an appropriate site and preceptor for you within a reasonable driving distance.
How should I prepare for nursing clinicals?
You will be in close communication with your placement coordinator all the way through to graduation. He or she will ensure you complete all requirements and meet deadlines, and will answer your questions, verify your clearance requirements, and walk you through the nursing clinicals checklist.
When will I receive my clinical placement details?
You will receive a notification from your placement coordinator prior to each clinical start date. Once the placement has been confirmed and communicated, you are encouraged to begin working directly with your preceptor to establish a schedule.
What can I expect during nursing clinicals?
All clinical experiences are a bit different because students work in a variety of health care environments. During clinical rotations, you will be under the close supervision of your preceptor and the indirect supervision of Rockhurst clinical faculty.

MENTAL HEALTH VS. PRIMARY CARE NURSE PRACTITIONERS

Psychiatric Mental Health NPs provide holistic mental health care across the life span for individuals and families experiencing acute and chronic mental/psychiatric conditions.
Primary Care NPs care for stable patients across the life span, emphasizing wellness education, comprehensive health maintenance, and management of chronic conditions.

In order to become a family nurse practitioner, a registered nurse must pass a board certification. Rockhurst's Online MSN-FNP program helps prepare students to pass their certification exams offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Rockhurst University Online graduates have maintained a 100% first-time pass rate for certification exams, a statistic that exceeds the national average.
In order to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, a registered nurse must pass a board certification. Rockhurst’s online psych NP program helps prepare students to pass their certification exams offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Rockhurst University graduates have maintained a 92% first-time pass rate for certification exams, a statistic that exceeds the national average.
Family nurse practitioners work with all age groups, from pediatrics to adult-gerontology, resulting in high demand for FNPs. FNPs are able to diagnose and treat conditions through assessment of patient health history, perform physical examinations, place orders for preventative screenings and diagnostic testing, make medical diagnoses and help treat and educate patients towards healthy lifestyles.
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners work with patients across the lifespan with mental health disorders or substance abuse problems. They provide mental health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment; psychotherapy for individuals and groups; psychotropic medication prescription/management; and advocacy for patients, populations and families. PMHNPs focus on delivering holistic mental health care and facilitating strong therapeutic relationships with patients experiencing acute and chronic mental/psychiatric disorders.

The online FNP program is offered on a full-time and part-time basis. The full-time track takes 8 semesters to complete, while the part-time track takes 11 semesters.
The online Dual FNP-PMHNP MSN program requires 63 credits of coursework and 1,250 clinical hours to graduate.
The online MSN-FNP program costs $765 per credit hour, plus $1,750.00 per practicum course, for a total program investment of $54,105, plus fees. Financial aid may be available to our online students.
CAMPUS IMMERSIONS FOR ONLINE PMHNP STUDENTS
Online PMHNP students will attend one 3-day clinical immersion on the Rockhurst campus in Kansas City, Missouri, for three days of clinical instruction in the new, state-of-the-art simulation lab and renovated nursing facilities. They will also engage in two virtual immersions to further hone their skills – one for FNP (2 days), one for PMHNP (2 days) for a total of 4 days. In these immersive clinical experiences, students will receive hands-on skills training, complete high- and low-fidelity simulation and demonstrate competencies through objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).
Following the campus immersion, students will return home and continue their online coursework. Additionally, they will complete the rest of their clinical hours at a predetermined site under the direct supervision of a licensed preceptor and the indirect supervision of a Rockhurst clinical faculty supervisor.
