Biography

Elizabeth Walter, Ed.D., is a tenure-track assistant professor in the education department. Prior to her time at Rockhurst University, she taught English, social science, reading and AVID in the Blue Valley Unified School District in Overland Park, Kansas. She was honored as the 2008 Blue Valley Teacher of the Year.

Walter's current research addresses the achievement gap in higher education attainment of minoritized populations of high school graduates in the Kansas City metro area. Additional research interests include educational leadership, trauma-informed schools and social justice. She teaches a variety of courses in the department, including Introduction to Education, Foundations of Classroom Management, Foundations of Special Education, Freshman Seminar, as well as Teaching Middle and Secondary School English. She also acts as a University mentor for student teachers and advises secondary English and foreign language students.

Her philosophy of education is closely tied to the Jesuit Core Values of Magis and Cura Personalis as she seeks to engage pre-service and in-service teachers in the ideals of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
