Recently Rockhurst University held a ceremony for the latest evolution of Sedgwick Hall as the new home for the Saint Luke’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. The hall has had a long history as the University’s first building, serving in various capacities such as residence, classroom and recreational spaces, since 1914. Now, after recent renovations, thanks to the University’s “For The Greater” campaign, Sedgwick Hall will foster learning for the next generation of healthcare workers.

During the renovation planning, the University was inspired by one of the six Jesuit core values, Cura Personalis, which means to ‘Care for the whole person’, a value Rockhurst takes seriously. The idea of caring for the whole person and showing care for the history of the students' experience was instrumental in the plan to reuse materials and preserve 90% of the original structure, which in a very concrete way, helped to blend the past and future. The University is paying homage to the thousands of students, faculty and staff who walked Sedgwick Hall for over a century. University President the Rev. Thomas B. Curran, S.J., stated in the Fall of 2021 that taking a moment to reflect on the natural resources expended for such a project echoes the Jesuit call to care for our common home.
Saint Luke’s College is known for the numerous resources available to care for its students and community, and that doesn’t stop for the online nursing students. Rockhurst's nursing and health students will benefit from the renovated learning accommodations with access to new classrooms, an interfaith meditation room, conference rooms, common areas, and the state-of-the-art Blessed Seelos Simulation Center. Rockhurst’s online nursing students at all levels will enjoy these benefits during their required on-campus experiences.
The newly renovated Sedgwick hall is optimized for inclusive learning, collaboration, and clinical practice. With simulation rooms that will help students prepare for real-life patient exams, practice rooms, a home health lab, debrief offices, two learning studios, and the health assessment lab, the modern facility will enhance the hands-on experience of the aspiring nurses and nurse practitioners.
The online ABSN nursing students will call the state-of-the-art facility home for their 10-day Residency during their first semester. Students will have direct patient care experience through clinical rotations, supervised by University faculty, and practice their skills, complete simulations and demonstrate their abilities in various critical situations. In addition, the Residency includes lab demos for vital signs, wound care, medication administration, and more, along with open skills lab practice times and exams, before concluding with a White Coat Ceremony.
The online MSN nursing students will spend fewer days on campus and still benefit from the new facility through their respective program’s Immersion experience (the number of days, virtual and on-campus immersions varies by program). Clinical instruction will be conducted from Sedgwick Hall for the two to three-day immersive clinical experience that includes hands-on skills training, completion of simulations, and demonstration of competencies through objective structure clinical examination (OSCE).
