ABSN Program Campus Residency

An important part of Rockhurst University’s online Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program, the ABSN Residency allows you to gain hands-on experience through on-campus clinical instruction. Learn more about what it is and what to expect.

What is the ABSN Residency?

Overview

  • In their first semester, ABSN students will attend Rockhurst’s campus in Kansas City, Missouri, for 10 days of clinical instruction in our renovated nursing facility, for experiential learning in our state-of-the-art simulation lab as well as through direct patient care.

Residency Activities

  • Receive hands-on instruction from the Rockhurst faculty
  • Complete high- and low-fidelity simulation
  • Practice head to toe assessment, open skills lab, wound care, acute patient care, among other skills
  • Demonstrate competencies in various critical elements
  • Experience direct patient care through clinical rotations
  • Gain exposure to different spheres of care such as skilled nursing, hospice, and long-term and acute care settings

After the Residency

  • After the residency, students will return home for the remainder of the program where they will continue their online coursework. Additionally, students will complete the rest of their clinical hours at a predetermined site under the direct supervision of a licensed RN preceptor and the indirect supervision of a Rockhurst clinical faculty supervisor.

What is the difference between the ABSN Residency and clinical hours?
  • The ABSN Residency is a 10-day program that allows you to learn through labs, simulations and other instruction in addition to clinicals. 
  • Completing a set amount of clinical hours is a separate requirement of the Online ABSN Program at Rockhurst. Clinical hours are completed through caring for patients in real-life situations under the supervision of a preceptor. Throughout the course of the program, students will complete 582.5 clinical hours.

The ABSN Residency is 10 days long.

When does the ABSN residency take place?

The required ABSN Residency takes place in the middle of the first semester. Your professors and Student Success Advisor will share the exact dates and details as you start the program.

How much does it cost to attend the residency?

The cost of the residency is included in your tuition.

The additional cost of housing and food expenses can vary depending on your choice of lodging. Rockhurst University welcomes students to take advantage of their affordable and discounted on-campus housing, which includes a room, bedding, meals in the dining center, free laundry and internet access during the duration of the 10-day residency. Once enrolled, students will receive more information from professors and the Student Success Advisor. The cost can be found on the Housing Application.

Where can I find housing for the duration of the residency?

Students may choose between local hotels or on-campus housing. Rockhurst University welcomes students to stay on-campus for greatest convenience and affordability. Students who choose to stay on campus during the residency will enjoy these cost-saving benefits:

  • A private bedroom for each night
  • Pillow and linens included
  • 10 meals in the dining center
  • Free laundry and internet access
  • Community style living and bathrooms
