“My name is Lydia Stephens. I am in the Accelerated Nursing Program at Rockhurst University.

“I liked being a medical assistant, but I wanted to be more hands-on. I wanted to have that opportunity to do a little bit more than what a tech can do.

“What's great about being a nurse is that you get to spend a lot more time with your patients. I really respect physicians and what they do. I know that they have a large quantity of patients, so they don't get to spend as much time with them. That's kind of why I wanted to become a nurse—I wanted to be able to get to know the patient a little bit better and to build that rapport with them.

“Rockhurst is prestigious for their nursing school around here. Every nurse that I ever worked with went to Rockhurst. I figured that if they can do it and become so successful, that I should check it out.

“To become a Rockhurst nurse, they put a lot of values into what they believe in, and they instill those values and pass them on to you.

“Being online has been great. They've gotten to know us as students a little bit more personally than they would in their larger traditional classes. Even though we're not on campus with them, they still are giving us that personal interaction.

“You want to always be looking to what the next thing is and how you can improve and what you can be doing for the patient to further their care.”
